The DR offers a rich mix of old and new attractions. “We were impressed with the experiences you don’t find in other Caribbean islands,” says Marla J. Burton, CMP, manager of group operations for BCD Meetings & Incentives. “Our clients loved the jeep safari to a local chocolate (cacao) farm and cigar factory.” In Casa de Campo, Markarian used the church terrace at Altos de Chavón, a hilltop cultural center built in as a replica of a 16th-century Tuscan town, for a cocktail party. “We were high on a bluff, with the river and cattle below—it was totally charming,” she says. The center also features art galleries, the Museum of Archeology and a 5,000-seat amphitheater. In the North, Puerto Plata’s Victorian architecture and the Amber Museum wow visitors. Tours and tastings at the Brugal Rum Factory are always crowd-pleasers. Early 16th-century buildings crowd the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo, the New World’s oldest city. Many of these edifices, such as the Alcázar de Colón (former home of Columbus’ son, Diego) welcome visitors and many can be used for special events. A French twist is apparent in the Northeast’s Las Terrenas beach resort, where French expatriates run chic shops, sidewalk cafes and small luxury hotels. Merengue— the national music/dance—permeates the DR with lively rhythms and friendly smiles. “Be sure to arrange for merengue lessons,” advises Alicia Baker, program manager for Chicago-based BCD Meetings & Incentives. ![]() |
