The DR’s wealth of exceptional meeting facilities and resorts makes it ideal for programs of all types and sizes. For example, on the East Coast, the Barceló Bávaro Convention Center can accommodate up to 5,000; the Paradisus Punta Cana has facilities for 1,250; and the Meliá Caribe Tropical welcomes up to 1,000. For small elite programs, the two-yearold boutique-style Tortuga Bay Hotel dazzles participants with furnishings designed by fashion icon and DR native Oscar de la Renta. In Santo Domingo, the beachfront Renaissance Jaragua Resort & Casino can accommodate groups of up to 1,300 delegates, and the seaside 288-room Hilton Santo Domingo accommodates groups of up to 700. New high-end resorts and meeting facilities have experts such as Trish Adams, industry relations director for Maritz Travel, sending more trips to the DR. “The DR is appealing because its new hotels are purposely built for meetings and incentives,” she says. On the East Coast, the 2,103-room Moon Palace Golf, Casino & Spa Resort, with convention space for up to 7,000 people, is set to open in December 2008; The Westin Roco Ki Beach &
Golf Resort is set for 2009; and a Fairmont is on for 2010. A new stand-alone convention center is a possibility in Santo Domingo but is still in the planning stages. In Las Terrenas on the Northeast Coast, The Peninsula House, a Small Luxury Hotel, opened in February of this year, with lavish space for small gatherings. |
