They hope to obtain benefits for the sow of lumber-yielding and fruit trees
The Ministry for Environment and Natural Resources and the Dominican Coffee Council (CODOCAFE) committed themselves to reforest hydrographic basins next to coffee plantations with lumber-yielding and fruit trees. The agreement will start running with a pilot plan in the town of Polo in Barahona, as in other areas of the named Deep South. Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal, minister for the Environment, highlighted that the strategy expects to diversify the economies of coffee producing families, and at the same time give back the use of resources to the environment with the reforestation of the hydrographic basins. Fausto Burgos Mejía, executive director of CODOCAFE, stated that the crop, from the environmental standpoint contributes to the water cycle and the collection of carbon for the generation of oxygen, as well as the protection of the soils and landscape beautification. During the last decade of the past century through the Quisqueya Plan, a similar action was developed which according to the minister duplicated revenues for the inhabitants of the Northern basins.
