The World Summit for the Future of Haiti is a summon from the Government of the Dominican Republic to the international community to seal a sustainable commitment with Haiti, in order to have the country recover not just from the earthquake of January 12^th, but from the historic isolation and poverty that it has faced for more than two hundred years. Under this argument, Dominican President Dr. Leonel Fernandez opened the first summon at the Rio Group Summit held in Cancun, Mexico last February.

The gigantic task of Haiti’s refoundation requires a long-term effort, and the start of the Action Plan for the reconstruction to guarantee financial and technical sustainability in order to ensure a continuous march towards Haiti’s road to progress and social development.

To make the financial donation viable for Haiti’s reconstruction project it is necessary that the specific programs and initiatives in terms of infrastructures, roadways, drinkable water systems, energy service, construction of houses, schools and universities be adjusted with the payment periods and the formalization and start of the coordination and follow-up mechanisms, and likewise, with promotional actions for private investment.

The World Summit for the Future of Haiti: Solidarity beyond the Crisis, to be held in the Dominican Republic on June 2^nd, seeks to create permanent links of solidarity from the international community with Haiti, and serve as spearhead for the beginning of the reconstruction work. For that, it will review the commitments from donating countries and organizations; it will present the list of projects contained by activities prioritized by every pillar of the Action Plan, and offer the detail on the advancement on management of the reconstruction process.

II- ObjeCtivEs

The purpose of the World Summit for the Future of Haiti is to ratify the International Community’s commitment, so that Haiti guarantees sustained support for the implementation of the Action Plan, and specifically to carry out the execution of the Action Plan. For the latter, it would earn solid support in terms of technical assistance and coordination of the activities, as well as the explicit commitments to the funds’ payment period.

The expected results would guide the deliberations towards the following aspects:

• Sustained commitment of the International Community, which would imply developing a solidarity strategy with Haiti.
• Ideal connection so that Haiti would overcome political isolation and be integrated as an active partner of the regional and world communities.
• Political support to ensure stability and strengthening of democracy in Haiti.
• Viability of the guidance for donation and/or technical cooperation in the big lines and specific projects.
